Lagos Life vs The Sims: Key Differences

Lagos Life vs The Sims 4: browser vs install, what is free, setting, Game Naira vs Simoleons, age rules and other players. Independent comparison.

Last updated:

If you have ever played The Sims, the pitch for Lagos Life will sound familiar. The official site describes it as "A Sims-style life game set in Lagos… Play free in your browser." The differences start with where it runs, how accounts work, what the in-game money is, and the fact that the city is Lagos rather than an invented suburb.

This page is an unofficial comparison. It uses only the Lagos Life official site and its terms of service (both checked 8 October 2026), two Vanguard news reports, EA's own announcement for The Sims 4 and its ESRB rating. We have not published a logged-in playtest yet, so anything about wages, rent or daily routine is deliberately left out until we can verify it. Lagos Life is only playable on its official site. The Sims is an EA/Maxis franchise. Neither is affiliated with this site.

Setting: fiction vs a real city

The Sims has always run on invented places. Willow Creek, Oasis Springs and the rest are designed to feel generic enough for anyone, anywhere.

Lagos Life uses Lagos itself. The public map on the official site showed about thirty named locations when we captured it on 8 October 2026, with one more marked "Coming soon". The terms are explicit that real places may be adapted, compressed, renamed or fictionalised, and that a venue appearing in the game does not mean it endorses the game. So it is Lagos, but a game version of Lagos.

Vanguard's explainer opens with "Lagos Life is basically 'The Sims' set in Lagos" (Vanguard, 6 October 2026). Its launch report says the game has been "drawing comparisons with The Sims", and that the developer was partly inspired by playing The Sims 3 as a child and by the Nigerian browser game Lagos Run (Vanguard, 7 October 2026). That lineage, more than any single mechanic, is why the comparison keeps coming up.

Platform and cost

Lagos Life runs in a web browser. There is nothing to install. The official site's own start-up checks say iPhone users need iOS 16.4 or newer (switching browsers does not help) and Android users should update Chrome. You create a free account with a name, a username, a password of at least eight characters and an optional email, and confirm you are 18 or over. The terms allow buying Game Naira with real money through a payment provider; it is optional and the game is free to play.

The Sims 4 is a large install on PC, Mac or console. The base game has been free since 18 October 2022, but most of the content that makes it The Sims, from seasons to pets to university, is sold as separate packs.

If you want something you can open in a tab during a lunch break, that is Lagos Life. If you want a single-player sandbox with building and furnishing, that is The Sims.

Accounts and other players

The Sims 4 is played as a single-player game: there is no shared city where other players see your household.

Lagos Life is online from the first screen. The game is saved on its servers (the site says so when loading is slow), your username, display name, profile and avatar are visible to other players, and the terms forbid selling, renting, transferring or sharing an account. That makes it closer to a persistent online game than to The Sims' private dollhouse.

Money: simoleons vs Game Naira

In The Sims 4, Simoleons are used only inside the game.

Lagos Life's money is governed by its terms of service, and the rules matter more than any single number:

  • Game Naira is a fictional unit. It is not issued by any central bank, has no exchange rate, and cannot be sent to a bank account or redeemed with the game for real money.
  • You can buy Game Naira with real money. The terms list Flutterwave as the payment channel (checked 8 October 2026; earlier terms named a different provider).
  • Transfers between players inside the game are allowed. Selling Game Naira to other people for real money, or any unauthorised exchange, is not.
  • Refunds are narrow: a payment that was charged but verifiably never delivered may be refunded; Game Naira that arrived and was then spent, transferred or simply regretted generally is not.

We have not verified how shifts, wages or rent actually work in play, so we do not list numbers here. When we do, they will come from a logged-in session with the date noted.

Updates and growth

The Sims 4 updates on EA's schedule, with packs sold alongside free patches.

Lagos Life is a week-old live game. Vanguard reported on 7 October 2026 that the developer had announced two million players and the launch of Abuja and Port Harcourt areas. That pace also means a guide written this week can be out of date next month; check the official site for the current state.

Who each game is for

Pick Lagos Life if you want a free, quick, culturally specific life-sim that you can play in a browser without installing anything, and you are fine with an online game where other players can see you.

Pick The Sims 4 if you prefer a game you install and play on your own, with building and furnishing, and you do not mind paying for packs over time.

Plenty of people will play both. They scratch different itches.
